Our busy schedule this week took us back to the familiar stage of Tokyo, where we were delighted to reunite with many old friends and meet numerous new acquaintances and artisans. We are very excited to initiate various collaborations with them in the upcoming events.
For the first issue of our ‘The LavoroR’ series, we had the privilege of interviewing the legendary figure in the world of menswear, Mr. Kenji Kaga. As the proprietor of the renowned Italian handmade tie brand, SEVEN FOLD, he possesses profound insights into the history of menswear and his own distinctive style. A few days ago, we visited his studio in Minami-Aoyama, where he shared with us his vision of Atelier Lavoro from his unique perspective.
Atelier Lavoro: Please introduce yourself to our audiences, Mr. Kaga.
Kenji Kaga: Hello everyone, my name is Kenji Kaga. Born in 1964, I am the Global CEO of SEVEN FOLD. In 1996, I played a key role in launching the renowned 'Tie Your Tie' store in Japan, a brand originally from Florence. Building on that experience, I established SEVEN FOLD Global in 2011, which includes both an office and a factory in Florence. Most recently, in 2017, I opened 'Tie Your Tie Florence' in Florence.
AL: How did you get into the menswear business, and what’s the most fascinating aspect of it for you?
Kenji Kaga: I’ve always loved fashion since I was a child, which is why I chose to pursue a career in the fashion industry. My father had a huge influence on me, introducing me to the culture of cars, films, music, and especially menswear from a young age. He’s also a big fan of James Bond films, and I think he drew a lot of inspiration from 007’s style when it came to fashion. I see this business as something I want to continue as long as I can.
AL: Can you share your first impression of Atelier Lavoro and what you like about it?
Kenji Kaga: I appreciate the brand uses traditional materials combined with modern details and classic styles. That’s what I like about Atelier Lavoro.
AL: If you were going to create or design something for Atelier Lavoro, what items would you choose and why?
Kenji Kaga: I would choose a peacoat made of cotton because I haven’t found any cool ones like that anywhere in Italy, and it’s something I really want.
AL: What’s your favourite piece from our lineup, and how does it blend into your lifestyle?
Kenji Kaga: I selected “Ace” Sports Jacket as my first order with Atelier Lavoro. I would style it with a turtleneck knit, a scarf, beige cotton pique trousers, and brown shoes before heading out of my house.
AL: Lastly, as someone who travels frequently from continent to continent, what item from Atelier Lavoro would you bring to your next destination, and can you share with us why?
Kenji Kaga: I would love to bring a Balmacaan Coat from Atelier Lavoro because it’s comfortable and so easy to wear.
This concludes our interview, and we would like to take this opportunity once again to express our gratitude for your time and for sharing your thoughts and wisdom with us, Mr. Kaga. We look forward to presenting your new MTM “Ace” Sports Jacket and sharing this exciting commission from a true icon of menswear with everyone.
'til next time!
